BEFORE THE SCAN:
There may be some preparation needed before the scan, please follow the instruction below.

Abdominal ultrasound: Please fast for 6 hours prior to the scan. Continue your usual medications with small sips of water and you may drink small amounts of black coffee or tea.

Renal ultrasound: Please follow the same directions as for abdominal ultrasound, but drink 1 Litre of water 1 hour prior to your examination.

Pelvic or Pregnancy ultrasound: Please drink 1 Litre of water 1 hour prior to your scan. Do not empty your bladder before the scan (if you feel uncomfortably full, please let reception know and they will guide you).

For all other ultrasounds such as extremities (arm, leg) or other body parts (thyroid, scrotum) you do not need to undergo any preparation.

DURING THE SCAN:
The scan will take between 15 – 30 minutes. You may be asked to change into a gown if necessary. Gel will be placed on your body at the region of the scan and an ultrasound probe will be placed on top of the gel. The probe helps produce the image of the scan and will needed to be moved around, at times there will be some pressure but it should never hurt or be painful. There is no radiation exposure during the scan.

RESULTS
The results of the examination will be sent to your doctor within 24 hours. Please make sure you have a follow up appointment to discuss the results with your doctor.
